A mind stretched by an idea

I thought while sitting on a plane on the way to the Global Atheist Conference in melbourne was a good time to write a very long overdue blog post.

Time has a habit of flying away when you intend to do things and my intention was always to make this blog a part of my life. I do still intend to do that.

I have been thinking more and more of late about the fascinating journey that I’ve undertaken on the path from religion to reason. As I come into contact with more and more people still caught up in my old life, I am often amazed by how much my thinking has changed on a thousand subjects.

Take for instance evolution. For myself and most people, the concept of natural selection is a given. The science and the reason leave little room for the evidence to ever stand up against it. This wasn’t always the case, there was a long period during my Christian walk that I denied this because it conflicted with my literal view of biblical creation.

Questioning Genesis

I’ve known for a long time that I’ve wanted to write, and after finally deciding to start work on ‘Pent Up Anger’ I thought it might be good to start sharpening my writing skills by using this poor unloved blog as a canvas for my creativity. Hope you enjoy, and please feel free to leave creative suggestions or comments.

I have often mused about what started me down the path to unbelief.

Unlike most atheists I’ve encountered, I wasn’t born without religious yearnings. As a child, I enjoyed a quiet faith thanks to my illustrated bible and my nominally Catholic mother. The stories and parables filled me with hope and the characters of Jesus & John the Baptist, David & Goliath and Adam & Eve were all as real to me as Santa Claus was.

As I grew up, my religious belief remained with me, though not to the extent that it would become later. I stayed silent during classes about evolution in science and biology. I argued fervently for a creator or ‘designer’ during extra-curricular philosophy. And in the library, I often studied books on comparative religion and even the occult. While many of my friends became interested in Wicca, I spent a good deal of time reading about Christianity, Judaism and even Islam. Years of exposure to moderate Christianity had made me skeptical of witchcraft and paganism.

My belief in Christianity, however, wasn’t realized until later. Clouded by adolescent hormones and a curiosity about monotheism, I fell victim to a pretty young girl who dragged me to church. Yes, of all the methods of evangelism, ‘flirt to convert’ is by far the most insidious.

Pent up anger – Preface

My wife and I were running late. Again.

We lived about thirty minutes away by car and hadn’t anticipated the crowd on this particular evening. As we drove into the parking area of the huge building, we were shocked at the number of cars and the line of people waiting to get in.

I was impressed at the level of attention offered by the seemingly endless number of car park attendants who were helping to guide people to the dwindling number of spaces. As we approached, the attendant said something into her walkie-talkie and being given a reply directed us to a parking space. After getting into our space, she welcomed us and pointed us towards the main entrance.

Pent up anger – The beginning

It’s been a long time coming, and as many of my friends will attest to, I’ve been talking about writing about my experiences in the pentacostal church for a long time.

That’s where you, my loyal two or so readers come in. I’ve decided that I’m going to use my blog to post the chapters to my book as I write them.

What does this mean.

Since this is a work in progress, the following can be expected.

  1. Expect mistakes.
  2. Expect me to do lots of updates
  3. Expect it to be a fair amount of time between chapters
  4. Expect me to not publish comments that are not constructive
  5. Expect me to delete all these posts if the book is ever published
  6. Expect me to use this blog as a means to promote and sell the book, should it ever be published

So, if all that is okay with you, please read on.

Notice: These chapters may not be used without my express written permission.

Spam!

It’s just been pointed out to me that my blog has been automatically categorizing every comment as spam for the last couple of weeks! This has now been fixed. Apologies to anyone who had tried to comment. Well, I mean anybody who isn’t a spammer who tried to comment!

Atheism as a religion

Time has been flying away since starting my new job, but I felt it was time for a new post! As they say.. ‘This above all, to thine own blog be true’. Yes, that was bad. I can hear the groans.

One of the criticisms that many people have of the ‘new atheists’ is that it looks an awful lot like religion. On looking very broadly, it would seem that we have a leader (or 4 actually), we have many ‘holy’ books which are spoken of with reverence, we have a conference that looks alot like Hillsong, we’re desparately trying to have our voice heard in the media, have our views seen in politics and we both have a huge number of people evangelising both online and offline.

The Quantum World

Latest video by Melody Sheep in the Symphony of Science series!

Good to see Morgan Freeman in there, the BBC series ‘Through the Wormhole’ is an incredible journey into the world of cosmology, astronomy, physics, geology and quantum theory. If you haven’t seen it, I thoroughly recommend it.

Why Christians hate Atheists

I thought this video raised some great points about Christians and Atheists. The concept of us ‘rejecting’ God is a fallacy. You can’t reject something that doesn’t exist. This video puts all this into perspective.

Evolution vs/of Christianity

A couple of days ago, I had the pleasure of being a part of a small ‘debate’ on facebook about the need for political leaders to have an understanding of science.

The debate was pretty standard, a couple of dedicated christians fighting that evolution is not only an unproven ‘theory’ and completely irrelivant to leadership. There was myself and another atheist and also one ‘unknown’ who jumped in at a crucial moment to lay the smack down on the unsuspecting believer.

Coming out is hard

There’s a lot of talk on the interwebs about atheists ‘coming out‘. Thanks in part to Richard Dawkins OUT campaign (see banner to the right), atheists are being urged to come out and tell everyone about their beliefs (and rightly so).

In my mind, there are two types of atheists. There are the ambivalent atheists, and the true atheists. Now, I use the word true more as a joke than as a judgement, because all forms of unbelief are intrinsically the same!
